Toyota is one of the most innovative and successful automotive companies in the world. Their vehicles are tailored to the expectations of their customers with priorities centered on superior quality and safety. Year after year, Toyota remains one of the world’s top selling carmakers.
But today, the automotive industry is, without question, evolving. Consumers are looking at the car differently. The car is not just for going from Point A to Point B; it has become an extension of a digital lifestyle. With the rise of mobile devices and faster wireless networks, the automotive industry remains on a rapid pace of development in automotive technology. Consumer appetites to be connected at all time, even while driving, are great. Automobile manufacturers like Toyota are faced with the challenge to deploy an ever-growing number of information, entertainment and communication systems to meet the increased demand for convenience, content, and safety in vehicles.
Toyota was looking to deploy a comprehensive in-vehicle solution that would adapt to the consumer products life cycle, usually less than a year, compared to a vehicle’s life cycle, usually many years. The solution was needed to provide safety for their customers. They sought a cloud-based vehicle integration solution that would allow for over-the-air updates and the ability to add new applications.
We’re seeing the popularity of applications among consumers, and our current objectives are to bring the app world to the vehicle. We want to provide a richer and more robust multimedia experience for the vehicle.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) partnered with Xevo to bring Toyota drivers a new connected application experience and revolutionary in-car technology platform: Entune. Entune, first delivered in 2011, is a platform that includes collection of popular mobile applications and data services that are accessible from inside Toyota vehicles. Toyota chose to utilize Xevo’s Xevo Engine as an integral part of the Entune platform.
Xevo Engine, an innovative thin-client middleware solution for building rich, interactive applications on resource-restricted platforms, reduces time-to-market and ensures products reach a broad array of devices with minimal development effort. Xevo Engine can integrate with embedded HTML5 browsers, navigation applications, and on-board diagnostic information to drive in-vehicle HMI and cloud-based data capture. Xevo Engine provides core vehicle connectivity to the cloud via embedded modules or a mobile device. It also provides a streamlined solution for the creation, operation and management of dynamic, high volume connected car programs like Toyota’s.
With the power of Xevo Engine, the Entune platform leverages the customer’s mobile phone to create an in-car user experience that offers integrated and upgradeable entertainment, navigation and information services. By using conversational voice recognition and in-vehicle controls, the driver does not have to touch their mobile phone, enabling safer connectivity. The user interface is also designed to provide greater safety, allowing the driver to stay focused on the road ahead.
Xevo Engine gives Toyota the power to seamlessly integrate Entune with third party software and hardware, such as the integration between the navigation system and location-based services. Thanks to Xevo Engine, Toyota engineers and Toyota vehicle owners can also easily add and remove content on the platform.
Developing systems as advanced as Entune® App Suite and Enform® App Suite require harnessing the expertise of an experienced partner. Collaborating with Xevo, Toyota is able to offer drivers an enhanced in-vehicle experience, while providing vehicles with a competitive advantage.
– Sandy Lobenstein, Vice President, Connected Vehicle Technology & Planning, Toyota
Today, both Toyota Entune and Lexus Enform, Toyota’s in-vehicle multimedia systems, are powered by Xevo Engine.
The Xevo Engine platform allows Toyota to seamlessly integrate with key partners, allowing assimilation between the navigation system and location-based services, as well as providing dynamic addition and removal of content by both Toyota and users. Toyota drivers can access and manage vehicle information, select third party apps and enjoy their own entertainment, directly from the in-dash display screen. Featured applications at the time of debut included Microsoft’s Bing (to keep navigation continuously up-to-date), iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable and Pandora. Toyota Entune also delivered, and continues to deliver, customizable real-time traffic data, fuel prices, weather, stocks and sports. The wirelessly upgradeable in-vehicle applications in Entune are never obsolete.
Xevo Engine takes a complex technical idea – extending a personal application experience across screens and devices – and turns it into the best in-vehicle user experience. And the response to Toyota Entune remains great.
Xevo is proud to make Toyota’s vision of a new, fully connected consumer experience in the car a reality.
